red bean soup

8 ounces smoked sausage, cut into 1/4-inch slices
1 (15)-1/2 oZ.) can small red beans, undrained or better yet use dried ones.
1 (14-1/2-oz.) can dices tomatoes with tomatoes with tomato juice
3 cups water
1 small onion, chopped
1 medium potato, diced
3 medium cloves garlic, thinly sliced crosswise
1 tsp. sweet paprika
1/2 tsp. salt to taste
1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
1/8 tsp. ground cayenne pepper
2 cups lightly packed chopped green cabbage
1/4 cup uncooked small elbow macaroni
1 tb. fresh lemon juice

Put the sausage into a large saucepan. Add the beans,
tomatoes, water, and onion, potato, garlic, paprika, 
salt black pepper, and cayenne. Bring to a boil. 
Reduce heat, cover, and simmer 10-15 minutes, 
or until the potatoes are almost tender.
Stir in the cabbage, macaroni, and lemon juice. 
Cook uncovered, 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes 
and macaroni are tender, stirring occasionally. © 2001-2007
